Tour de Romandie (SUI) - 28.04-03.05.2009
The mixed but balanced route of the Tour de Romandie (SUI) always brings out the best in the riders, with the overall winner both a good climber and strong time trial rider.
The race route always visits the major cities in the French-speaking region of Switzerland but also includes climbs into the tough Swiss mountains.
In 2008 Germany’s Andreas Klöden of the Astana team took overall victory ahead of Roman Kreuziger of the Czech Republic and Italy’s Marco Pinotti.
Klöden set up his overall victory by winning the stage three time trial in Sion and negotiating the hilly stages brilliantly. Thanks to scoring points in other UCI ProTour races, Klöden went on to finish third in the individual standings of the 2008 UCI ProTour and helped Astana finish second in the team standings.
Organisers of the race, whose principal sponsor is Credit Agricole Financements, unveiled details of the 2009 route last November. The six days of racing kicks off with a prologue time trial around the Olympic city of Lausanne on Tuesday April 28. Other stages are from Montreux to Fribourg and then around La Chaux-de-Fonds in the north of Romandie. A time trial will loop around Yverdon-les-Bains before a key mountain stage through the Jura mountains from Estavayer-le-Lac to Sainte-Croix. The final road race stage will be from Aubonne to Geneva.
