Volta Ciclista a Catalunya (ESP) - 19-25.05.2008

The Volta a Catalunya is one of the oldest races on the UCI ProTour calendar, first being held in 1911. The week-long race traditionally focuses on the roads of the Catalan region of southeastern Spain. and stages visit the coastal holiday resorts, the foothills of the Pyrenees to the north and the regional capital Barcelona.

The race is held at the same time as the Giro d’Italia in May, but offers an excellent alternative to the constant three weeks of Italian racing. The Volta a Catalunya reminds everyone of the importance of cycling’s roots and traditions while also inspiring the highest possible quality of racing.

In 2007, Vladimir Karpets, of the Caisse d’Epargne team won thanks to his excellent stage racing and especially his time trialing ability. The powerful Russian beat Australia’s Michael Rogers of T-Mobile by 40 seconds, with fellow Russian Denis Menchov of Rabobank third.

Young British sprinter Mark Cavendish, of the T-Mobile team, showed his huge potential by winning his first ever UCI ProTour race in Catalunya. Two stage victories acted as a launch pad for the 22 year-old, who went on to win 11 races in his first full season as a professional.

Other talented young UCI ProTour riders will be hoping the 2008 Volta a Catalunya will do the same for their careers.
