Deutschland Tour (GER) - 10-18.08.2007
The Deutschland Tour is the most successful new race of the UCI ProTour calendar and hasserious ambitions to become one of the truly great stage races on the calendar. It is the only German stage race in the ProTour and offers nine-days of great racing on every kind of terrainwith flat and rolling stages in the north and east and often steep mountain stages in the south. In 2006 local hero Jens Voigt captured the hearts of the German cycling fans and the praise ofthe international media by fighting for overall victory and the prestigious leader’s yellow jersey. The powerful German rider won three stages including the decisive mountain stage to Sankt-Ankton. He had to fight against the best climbers such as 2005 winner Levi Leipheimer and Kazakstan’s Andrey Kashechkin but won after taking the 40 km individual time trial around Bad Sackingen. With a later slot in the summer UCI ProTour calendar, the 2007 Deutschland Tour should be even better and is setting the way amongst the major stage races in terms of sponsorship and organisation. Voigt is expected to be a contender in 2007 but will also face stiff opposition from the riders who decided not to ride the Vuelta a España and from the new generation of talented German riders.
